Continuing with the Triffids reissue program that we started in 2006 with the release of the band’s classic Born Sandy Devotional album, and which has seen Calenture , In The Pines , Black Swan and Treeless Plain all remastered and released as deluxe CDs with additional music and sleeve notes, comes the 18 track Wide Open Road – The Best of the Triffids compilation. This is a tremendous introduction to a band with an impressive body of work. (words from the sleeve notes by John O Donnell) “…Eleven years after his death (in February, 1999), the songs of David McComb and the music made by The Triffids still lives and breathes and resonates. As evidenced here…For me, The Triffids had the perfect arc…They remind me of that great line by Jack Kerouac in On The Road where he says ‘the only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones that never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centrelight pop and everybody goes “Awww!”‘… With The Triffids, the middle of the arc, the blue centrelight pop, where everybody goes “Awww!” is the song “Wide Open Road”, which is why it’s right that it’s the lead-off and title track of this collection… But all around and before and after “Wide Open Road” were great moments of wildly varying colour and kind. Forming in Perth, Western Australia in the late 70s, around drummer Alsy McDonald and David McComb on guitars/vocals, the Triffids mutated through a number of different lineups as they released a handful of crude cassette ‘albums’, compiling more than 80-90 songs. Graduating to vinyl, their 7″ singles were naive gems, tracks like “Reverie” and “Spanish Blue” full of pop smarts and sharp lyrics but with a clumsy, awkward charm. “Beautiful Waste” was their first great song. …

Quarantine The Past: The Best Of Pavement comes out on Domino on Monday the 8 th of March 2010 . This fully re-mastered 23-track compilation will be available on double LP, CD and digital album formats. The tracks span the entirety of Pavement’s career from 1989 to 1999, from the scratchy and mysterious sounds of their early vinyl-only releases to the rich, multilayered warmth of their final recordings. Although the compilation does not include any unreleased material, it definitely goes deeper than the “hits.” Quarantine The Past lands in stores as Pavement embark on their first live appearances since the fall of 1999. Dates begin in New Zealand on March 1 and continue through Australia, UK and Europe over the spring and summer, with 4 dates at London’s Brixton Academy in May and the band curating and performing at All Tomorrow’s Parties. We are holding a Guess The Track Listing Contest. The album contains 23 tracks, all previously released, and the first track is “Gold Soundz” (MP3 of remastered version below).
